Despite minor fluctuations in revenue from year to year, the cigar industry has maintained a profitable trend.

US stands as the key contributor to increasing demand for l uxury cigars by accounting for a sales value of 2.7 Billion USD in 2022, which also happens to be 91.3% of the North American sales value.
Cigar Market Structure Statistics
- The flavored segment of the cigar market held a market share of 32.40% in 2022, while the unflavored held a majority market share of 67.60%.
Unflavored cigars are premium and all-natural with no added synthetics or flavors. Flavored Cigars are with an infused oil or syrup, which gives a flavor to the cigar.

Parejo Cigars are straight in shape. The name derives from the Spanish word meaning equal. It has a perfect cylinder shape and the same ring gauge from cap to foot. Parejo is divided into two subgroups, Vitola and Box Pressed. Any cigars that are not straight on the sides are categorized as figarudo. The varied ring size from a foot to bead provides a pleasurable experience compared to Parejo. This includes Pyramid, Torpedo, Belicoso , Perfecto, and Chisel.

The use of tobacco was significantly higher among men than women in 2021, with 36.7% of men using tobacco compared to only 7.8% of women.

- Nearly three-quarters — 73.8% — of past 30- day cigar users ages 12-17 said the leading reason for their cigar use was “because they come in flavors I like” followed by 58.2% who stated it was “because they are affordable.”
Cigar Consumption Statistics Among Adults
- In 2020, more adult males report using cigar products “every day” or “some days” (6.3%) compared to adult females (0.8%). More African American adults reported using cigar products every day or some days (4.6%), compared to whites (3.8%) and Hispanics (2.2%).
Youth and young adults prefer cigar brands that come in a variety of flavors, and preference for flavored products decreases significantly with age (95% of 12-17 year old cigar smokers report use of a usual brand that makes flavored cigars compared with 63% of cigar smokers aged 35 and older).

- Cigar sales are conducted mainly by offline channels.
Over the past six years, there has been an increase in the share of cigar sales made online. Particularly, the percentage of online sales has increased from 0.8% in 2017 to 3.6% in 2022.
Cigar Pricing Statistics
- The price per unit of cigars has steadily increased from 2014 to 2022. In 2014 it was $0.62, and by 2022, it had risen to $0.78. The overall increase was $0.16 per unit over the nine-year period.
Perceptions of cigars
- The US population perceives cigar products overall to be harmful and addictive.
- In a nationally representative sample of young adults ages 18-34, more respondents rated cigars as less risky than cigarettes (13.9%) than they rated other tobacco products, including non-combustible snus (10.0%) and other smokeless tobacco products (7.1%).
Statistics about Health effects of Cigars
- All cigars contain harmful and potentially harmful constituents, and the extent to which they negatively affect health largely depends on how they are used (e.g., frequency and duration of use, pattern of inhalation).
- Though cigar smoke is generally similar to cigarette smoke, it contains higher levels of harmful constituents including tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), NNK, carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia, and tar.
- Compared to never smokers, people who had exclusively ever smoked cigars had a higher risk of developing tobacco-related cancer, particularly lung cancer and head and neck cancers.
- Nearly 200,000 cardiovascular conditions and cancer cases were attributable to exclusive cigar smoking among US adults aged ≥35 years.
- Cigar smokers have a marked increase in risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and experience higher mortality from COPD than do non-smokers.
- Cigar smoking is linked to gum disease and tooth loss.
Tobacco Products Regulating Policy Environment
- Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (Tobacco Control Act), signed into law on June 22, 2009, gives FDA authority to regulate the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products.
- The Tobacco Control Act puts in place specific restrictions on marketing tobacco products to children and gives FDA authority to take further action in the future to protect public health. These provisions ban: sales to minors, vending machine sales, the sale of packages of fewer than 20 cigarettes, tobacco-brand sponsorships of sports and entertainment events or other social or cultural events, free giveaways of sample cigarettes and brand-name non-tobacco promotional items.
- The Tobacco Control Act does not: require prescriptions to purchase tobacco products, require the reduction of nicotine yields to zero, ban face-to-face sales in a particular category of retail outlets, ban certain classes of tobacco products.

- Historically, cigar smoking in the United States has been a behavior of older men, but the industry’s increased marketing of these products to targeted groups increased the prevalence of use among adolescents.
- The increased visibility of cigar smoking from advertising and promotional activities is “normalizing” cigar use. Tobacco companies promote cigar smoking as pleasurable, a symbol of status, wealth and class.
